The Catholic Church teaches us to hold marriage as sacred. It is a gift from the hand of God, who created male and female in his image so that they may become one body. In marriage, the love between a man and a woman is blessed by God.
Marriage is a union in faith and a response to God’s call to holiness, and, once married, the couple becomes the symbol of God’s love on earth. Marriage is intended to be a union that lasts until the death of one of the spouses. It is a union that God has brought together and no person is able to dissolve that union.
In a marriage ceremony, it is not the priest or deacon who marries the couple, but rather it is the man and woman who marry each other. The two joining in matrimony are the ones conferring the sacrament upon each other. The priest or deacon is an official church witness to the marriage.
Catholic marriage is sacred, and those who decide to get married in the church need to be thoroughly prepared for it. Therefore, all engaged couples are required to receive sacramental preparation. Couples must meet with their priest or deacon at least six months prior to the desired wedding date.
