While Confirmation is a distinct and complete sacrament in its own right, its purpose is to perfect in us that which was begun in Baptism. Through Confirmation we receive a special grace by which our faith is deepened and strengthened. In a sense, Confirmation is a spiritual "growing up."
Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit that unites us more firmly to Christ, increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, and strengthens our bond with the Church and her mission of bearing witness to Christ. The gift of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation completes the sacraments of initiation and equips a person to live one’s faith as an adult.
The gift of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation draws a person into a stronger bond with the body of Christ, the Church. It encourages a person to receive the sacraments and pray with the community regularly, to make friends at church who are fellow pilgrims on a journey of faith, to have partners on larger tasks and service projects, to pass on the gift of faith to others, particularly children and those searching for God, and to give collective or corporate witness.
Through Confirmation the Holy Spirit prepares a person for battle and gives a person a firm resolve and determination to reject temptation, stand up against evil, defend the faith, and withstand attacks.
Preparation for the sacrament of confirmation is offered to grade 11 students who have been a part of an ongoing parish religion or Catholic faith formation process.
Preparation includes orientation, classroom instruction, opportunities for personal growth in service ministry and spiritual growth experiences, interviews, and a retreat experience for the candidates. While school age children are prepared through our Confirmation program, adults wishing to confirm are prepared through our R.C.I.A. program.
